USA TODAY Handout Walt Disney Company has its « fingers crossed » as the live-action « Mulan,  » centered around a legendary Chinese warrior, remains the media giant’s first tentpole movie to be released in theaters following the nationwide shuttering of cinemas due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Disney’s new CEO Bob Chapek maintained the July 24 release date for « Mulan » during the company’s second quarter earnings conference call Tuesday, saying he expects theaters will see « some return of semblance of normality in terms of number of screens and number of shows.  » « Our fingers are crossed,  » said Chapek, speaking from his home during the conference call. « That’s our first big movie out of the gate.  » Chapek obliquely referenced Christopher Nolan’s drama « Tenet » will be opening July 17, the week before « Mulan.  » « We’re going to get a pretty good idea because there’s a competitive movie opening up before ours does,  » said Chapek, noting that Disney is banking on « incredible pent-up demand from moviegoers » to help boost box office. Disney’s Shanghai theme park: To reopen May 11 with precautions; what about U. S. parks? Disney, which made about $13 billion in worldwide box office in 2019, has experienced « widespread disruption » due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The global lockdown led to the shuttering of theaters and a complete film production halt. But on Tuesday Disney maintained the rescheduled theatrical release dates of its major 2020 films, including « Mulan,  » Mavel’s « Black Widow » (Nov. 6), Pixar’s « Soul » (Nov. 20) and 20th Century Fox’s « Free Guy » (Dec. 11). « All tentpoles have been rescheduled theatrically for the year. We very much believe in the value of theatrical experience overall to launch blockbuster movies,  » said Chapek, who also noted there could be changes as the pandemic continues. « We’re going to evaluate each one of these movies on a case-by-case basis,  » he said. Last month, Disney reclassified the theatrical release of « Artemis Fowl » straight to streaming on Disney Plus in June. But it’s a far cry from Universal Studios, which roiled theater owners with the streaming release of « Trolls » as theaters shuttered due to the coronavirus, bypassing a delayed theatrical run. Chapek said there are currently no plans to begin production of upcoming movies, such as Marvel films, in light of the ongoing pandemic. But when the production does resume, filming will feature health precautions such as masks on sets, a precaution that will be taken for guests and employees as the Disney parks open. « We will be very responsible in terms of masks and the same type of procedures as in our parks when we proceed, «  said Chapek. Disney did express some bright spots amid the economic devastation of the quarter, including the continued rollout of its Disney Plus streaming service, which has hit 54 million global subscribers. And despite the complete lack of live televised sports, Chapek highlighted the early release of ESPN’s documentary series « The Last Dance,  » about the final championship season of the Chicago Bulls. The bright spot for the sports network is the most-viewed ESPN documentary ever. The virtual programming around the NFL draft featured « a bigger audience than ever before,  » said Chapek, with over 55 million sports-starved viewers across three-day event. Even if televised sports are slow to return, or hampered by audience-less stadiums as a COVID-19 precaution, Chapek believes ESPN is hitting its stride with creative programming. « Sports will come back strong, and when they do we believe ESPN is best positioned to benefit with more offerings than anyone else,  » said Chapek.
